BIOGRAPHY

Sean Crim (b. 1992, Atlanta, Georgia) is a contemporary artist based in Atlanta, Georgia whose practice spans across painting, light and sculpture. His work explores how awareness transforms our perception of emotions using color psychology, neuroscience and spatial experience as visual language. His multidisciplinary practice incorporates flashe, acrylic and oil paint, neon light, and naturally sourced materials, alongside EEG (electroencephalography) technology used to observe patterns of brain activity during moments of reflection and emotionally aware states. These observations inform an abstract visual language of color, gesture, movement, and light, examining the relationship between measurable physiological and psychological activity.

Crim's work is rooted in an ongoing exploration of vulnerability, presence and acceptance. Rather than seeking to define or prescribe emotional responses, his compositions create conditions for introspection, allowing viewers to encounter their own psychological and sensory experiences through the work.

Born and raised in Georgia, Crim studied AP art at Georgetown Preparatory School in Washington, D.C., before earning a Bachelor of Science in Finance and a minor in Studio Art from Wake Forest University in 2015. After transitioning from commercial real estate to a full-time artistic practice, he relocated to Los Angeles in 2017. During this period, his work evolved from figurative painting to non-objective abstraction and into neural abstraction, eventually incorporating neon light and neuroscience-informed methods of observation.

Towards the end of 2024, Crim returned his studio and practice to Atlanta, initiating a new phase of material and conceptual investigation. His recent paintings incorporate Georgia red clay collected from locations connected to his childhood and personal history. Serving as both a physical foundation and a symbolic connection to place, the clay situates his exploration of emotion within broader questions of memory, identity, belonging, and acceptance.

Through the integration of empirical observation, intuitive mark-making, and sensory experience, Crim examines the space between what can be measured and what can only be felt. His work invites viewers to consider awareness not simply as an act of observation, but as an active force in shaping perception.

Crim has exhibited across the United States, including Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Seattle, and Atlanta. His work is held in private collections nationally and internationally.
